Small wastewater treatment plants for households, ponds, ships and car washes

Wastewater treatment at the source

Big is not always best. Large centralized treatment of wastewater is the well-established approach but treatment at source is at times the best solution. Geographical location, less complex contamination, and opportunities of treated water reuse are just three reasons for considering decentralised treatment on-site. We and our partners have developed extensive experience in this field with specialized small-scale and self-contained treatment plants providing reliable service in advanced wastewater treatment on-site in households, ponds, ships and car washes.

Wastewater treatment plant for households

Separate households

The mini wastewater treatment plant BioTrap 2 has been developed for households to meet sewage treatment requirements on-site.

BioTrap 2 is based on the MBBR™ biofilm technology and is virtually a scale-downed municipal treatment plant with biological removal of BOD, COD and nitrogen, chemical precipitation and sludge separation. The treated wastewater can be discharged directly to a drainage ditch.

BioTrap is marketed and sold by Ifö Sanitär (Avloppssystem IFÖ Trapper).

Another wastewater treatment plant for households

More MBBR™ biofilm solutions for separate households

The company Martin Bergmann Umwelttechnik from Germany has developed a solution for treatment of wastewater from households, which is based on the MBBR™ biofilm technology. The product is named "WSB® clean". The process can be produced for 4 inhabitants up to 500 inhabitants. More than 20 000 units have been sold throughout Europe, North America and the Middle East. In the process the wastewater is first treated with a preliminary sedimentation. In the second stage the water is biologically treated in the aerated reactor with a Moving Bed™ biofilm process. Finally the water is treated in the final sedimentation unit.

Wastewater treatment plant for fishponds

Fish ponds equipped with efficient MBBR™ biofilm technology

The Nexus filtrations system has been developed for filtering ponds. The system can be used for clarifying ponds with a size from 4,500 liters up to 34,000 liters.

The Nexus filtration system is based on the MBBR™ biofilm technology and one advantage among several is the wastewater treatment process small footprint. The system can also be upgraded with a mechanical filter to further improve the treatment results.

The Nexus filtration System is marketed and sold by EvolutionAqua Ltd.

A ship with MBBR™ wastewater treatment process

Ships with MBBR™ wastewater treatment

The condition onboard a ship places unique demands on the design and construction of the wastewater treatment plant. It is important that key process functions like aeration, inflow and outflow work properly even though the ship is heaving and rolling on the open sea. Reliable treatment of both grey- and blackwater is achieved by combining the MBBR™ biofilm technology with other process steps creating a complete self-contained treatment system. Scanship Environmental has installed this packaged wastewater treatment plant in some twenty ships belonging to the shipping companies Norweigan Cruise Line and Royal Carribean Cruises. The system has been very successful and has been giving stable treatment results.

A car wash with system for wastewater treatment

Car washes

In cooperation with Autowash, AnoxKaldnes have developed and integrated a mini biological treatment plant to recycle water for car washes. The biological treatment plant replaces chemical precipitation with metal salts and is based on Moving Bed™ biofilm reactor using Natrix MBBR™ biofilm carriers. The wastewater treatment plant also includes an ozonation unit process, and a hydro cyclone for solids separation and sedimentation. The process performance requirement is to achieve at least a 10-fold decrease in fresh water consumption.

Mini treatment plants have been installed at 30 car washes in Sweden. The plants have exhibited excellent performance with stable operating records and very little maintenance required.
