Research and development of the activated sludge process

Reference method
The activated sludge process is a core technology at AnoxKaldnes and it serves as a benchmark in the development of new processes and in assessment of wastewater.
Development areas
Research and development of the activated sludge process is active in the following four main areas:
- Selector technologies. AnoxKaldnes was among the first to apply selectors (i.e. highly loaded, compact pre stages) to improve activated sludge processes. Over the years a considerable amount of in house know-how has been built.
- New processes. Multi-stage processes create opportunities for innovative advancements in biological wastewater treatment. One example is the AnoxKaldnes LSP™ process that effectively reduces the amount of sludge produced during activated sludge wastewater treatment.
- Combination techniques: The combination of activated sludge and MBBR™ biofilm technology results in a compact, robust and efficient process. These technologies such as the HYBAS™ hybridprocess and the BAS™ process are the kind of novel solutions being developed by AnoxKaldnes.
- Laboratory processes. When the biodegradability of a wastewater is to be evaluated in the laboratory, our benchmark is an optimized lab-scale activated sludge process.
