Research and development of HYBAS™ our IFAS process

Focusing nutrients
The HYBAS™ process, which is a combination of MBBR™ biofilm technology and activated sludge in the same tank also known as IFAS, has primarily been developed for the removal of nutrients.
Extensive testing
The HYBAS™ IFAS process has been tested for some years at pilot-scale on municipal wastewater. The results have been excellent due to the high nitrification activity in the carrier biofilm and efficient BOD and COD degradation by the activated sludge. The activated sludge also has exhibited good separation characteristics. The MBBR™ biocarriers were specially designed to provide the required niche for the nitrifying microorganisms. Several full-scale plants with the HYBAS™ biofilm process are now in operation.
Development areas
Further development of the HYBAS™ process is aimed at arriving at a more compact treatment technology and includes:
- Improvment of the carrier material.
- Optimizing for nitrification, denitrification and biological phosphorous removal.
- Simultanous nitrification and denitrification.
