Research and development of the
MBBR™ biofilm process

Vision
Our vision is to keep on developing the technique behind and increase our knowledge about the MBBR™ biofilm process to be able to offer more efficient and compact solutions.
Development areas
The suspended biofilm technology development is mostly related to the carrier design, application, and/or process integration as follows:
- Carrier design. Different wastewater characteristics and treatment objectives place different demands on the carrier construction. For example, high contaminant loads demand efficient carrier mass transfer, high amounts of fibers require an optimized carrier geometry, and slow-growing bacteria, such as nitrifiers, need to be protected within the carrier.
- New applications. Developments on how to use the suspended biofilm technology at extreme temperatures or pH, under nutrient limitation, or with in-mill treatment bring new opportunities and benefits for our clients.
- Combination of processes. A substantial part of the R&D at AnoxKaldnes is in the design of combination processes such as BAS™ biofilm activated sludge processes and HYBAS™ IFAS processes.
