Thermophilic MBBR™ biofilm processes and sludge processes

Hot stuff for aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment
Thermophilic processes are operated at high temperatures. It is even possible to operate these biological processes at temperatures above 80°C. Thermophilic conditions are used in biological systems both for aerobic wastewater treatment and anaerobic wastewater treatment. The process configuration could either be an advanced MBBR™ biofilm process or an more traditional sludge process.
Low sludgeproduction one of several advantages
Sludge production is low for anaerobic processes and it becomes even lower at higher temperatures. Therefore, anaerobic thermophilic processes are of interest in the treatment of high strength wastewater, such as those with high levels of starch. Similarly, sludge wastes are of potential interest for thermophilic treatment methods.
An added advantage of thermophilic treatment is that the digested sludge is easier to dewater.
Worth more studies
In the pulp and paper industry the trend is moving towards increased process temperatures due to the increased closure. Thermophilic biological treatment with a short hydraulic retention time is a cost efficient treatment of wastewater from the pulp and paper industry.
